Brief Bio[]
I'm a thirty-something community manager from Portland who is building and managing online communities for my company's customers and users.
Skills[]
- Online: I've been using the net for more than twenty years, starting with email and BBSes and jumping into the WWW with both feet. I've done website development, html coding, and spent several years doing research and development into next-generation human-computer interfaces, creating new ways for people to use technology to create society. I use Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Strands, YIM, AIM, and GTalk constantly.
- Open Source: I've recently used Drupal to develop my company's website. I've been using Firefox since Mozilla came into existence.
- Programming: I can program software (I've used Fortran, C, C++, Visual Basic, Java, Perl) but mostly I prefer to work on the user-interaction design and let people who enjoy programming actually write the code. I specialize in working with users to generate, define, and document requirements.
- Teaching: I've taught college statistics, introductory psychology, and neurophysiology classes, and have taught tae kwon do to students ranging from kindergartners to retirees.
What I Hope To Learn at FOSSCoach[]
I am looking for tips and suggestions on creating and managing an open source community. In particular I am looking for ways to kick-start participation, and then for advice on what's needed to keep and grow the community membership.
